About Animal Acupuncture
The earliest use of acupuncture on animals dates back 3000 years in China. Horses were essential to militaristic efforts and therefore their health was paramount. Modern day animal acupuncture began in the 1970's in the United States when acupuncturists began translating and transcribing these ancient texts. This fundamental step led to the establishment of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 1974.
Currently here in Oregon, most acupuncture is provided by veterinarians. Acupuncture to animals from an acupuncturist is within our scope of practice with a referral from the animal's veterinarian.
Why Seek Care
Arthritis
Joint pain can decrease activity and quality of both the canine and equine, just as it can in humans.
Pain Management
Wear and tear happens to all living beings. Help your dog or horse live more comfortably.
Lameness
Addressing any reason for lameness in a horse is vitally important. Laminitis, ringbone and other conditions in the hoof benefit from acupuncture.
Allergies
Allergies in animals can present as digestive upset or skin sensitivity.
Gastrointestinal
Acupuncture can help ease symptoms of colic and keep the digestive tract moving smoothly.
Metabolic
Diabetes, Cushing's and other metabolic diseases happen in animals too. Complement their treatment plan with acupuncture.
"We all really enjoyed Arlo's acupuncture appointment with Suzanne. The dogs warmed up to Suzanne quickly and enjoyed meeting her and investigating her bag of supplies. I was really surprised to see Arlo relax so deeply once the needles were in--he was in a trance! He also seemed to enjoy the acupressure massage after the needles were out. Arlo was so relaxed and calm for the rest of the day and his low back/hip area appeared less sensitive."
Suzanne made our first canine acupuncture experience incredibly positive. She was not only informative but also deeply attentive to our dog’s comfort—adapting her approach thoughtfully throughout the session. As a fellow acupuncturist, I truly appreciate her skill and sensitivity, and I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone seeking compassionate, expert care for their animals.
